According to the statistical agency, the population grew by 3.2% in 2023, reaching 40,769,890 inhabitants as of January 1, 2024, the highest rate since 1957 when it grew by 3.3%.

Across Canada, the population increased by 1,271,872 people between January 1, 2023, and January 1, 2024. Statistics Canada states that 97.6% of that population growth was the result of immigration; 471,771 immigrants settled in the country last year, and the number of temporary residents, most of whom are foreign workers, increased by 804,901.

Canada is growing at an unprecedented rate since the 1950s baby boom, largely driven by the arrival of non-permanent residents.

Ontario’s population grew by 3.4%, although it lost 36,197 residents who moved to other provinces, according to Statistics Canada. Alberta gained 55,107 residents from other provinces, the largest increase since comparable data became available in 1972.

Quebec recorded only 400 more births than deaths in 2023, while the number of temporary residents increased by 174,200 people and permanent immigrants by 52,800. About 9,400 people left the province. Across Canada, births exceeded deaths by 31,103, according to Statistics Canada data.
